Sagres

Sagres is one of the places in Portugal which reached a worldwide projection, that fact was mainly due to its privileged geographical position and the fact of Henry the Navigator have resided on site.

Few places have a so strong mystical charisma as Sagres, your own name comes from the word & quot; Sacrum & quot; = Sacred site.

The coastal strip that surrounds the village, is endowed with a carved wild grandeur of steep cliffs and golden beaches.

HENRY THE NAVIGATOR son of King John and Philippa of Lancaster, was born in 1394. He came to be named mayor of Christ order whose wealth was used for the benefit of discoveries, it has been the leading developer.

Later his brother (Peter) gave him the region of Sagres and from 1452 began to manifest tendency to settle here; here sent a letter to the headquarters of the Order of Christ (Tomar), calling Sagres as their village.

He died in Sagres in 1460, his body was buried in the church of Santa Maria (Lagos), and later definitively transferred to the Monastery of Batalha.
